Which Towns In East Sussex Do You Cover?
All of them. Most people comparing removal companies in East Sussex are really asking two questions: will you actually come out this far, and do you know the street. The answer to the first is yes across the whole county. The second is what the rest of this guide is about.
Worth knowing for anyone new to the area: Brighton and Hove is a separate unitary authority rather than part of East Sussex County Council, and Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath and Hurstpierpoint are West Sussex despite feeling local to the same patch. We work across all of it, but the parking and permit rules differ, which matters more than most people expect.
The Five Districts, And What Each One Actually Involves
Lewes district. The county town is the tightest access we handle regularly. Twittens, steep lanes off the High Street, flint terraces with no frontage and streets where a Luton simply cannot turn. We often plan Lewes jobs as a shuttle, running the Sprinter between the property and a larger van parked somewhere sensible. Newhaven and Seaford are easier, with more post war housing and better frontage, and Peacehaven is exposed enough that wind matters on a blanket run.
Eastbourne. Seafront conversions and mansion blocks along Grand Parade and Royal Parade, with the usual questions about lifts, communal stairwells and whether the entrance can be propped. Inland towards Old Town and Hampden Park it is largely interwar semis with driveways, which is a much faster day.
Removals in Hastings, East Sussex, and the wider Rother district. Hastings Old Town is the hardest access in the county after Lewes. Narrow lanes, steep steps up to front doors, and properties where the nearest legal stop is a genuine carry rather than a few metres. St Leonards has grander Victorian terraces with better frontage. Bexhill is flat and straightforward. Rye is beautiful and awkward in equal measure, with cobbles and restricted vehicle access in the citadel.
Wealden. The rural end. Single track lanes, gravel drives, overhanging trees and gateposts set for a car rather than a 3.5 tonne Luton. We ask for a photo of the approach as well as the frontage on Wealden jobs, because the question is usually whether the van can physically reach the house at all. Local Pro Tip: Send the Approach, Not Just the Frontage
On most moves a photo of the front of the property tells us what we need. In Wealden and the rural parts of Rother it does not, because the thing that catches people out is a quarter mile of single track lane with passing places, or a gateway built for a Fiesta.
Stand at the road end of your drive and take one photo looking towards the house, then one at the gate looking back. Those two pictures have saved more Wealden jobs from going wrong than any amount of description over the phone.
How Much Do Removals In East Sussex Cost?
House removals in East Sussex are priced by the hour locally, and as a fixed day rate for anything leaving the county. Two movers and a van is £80 an hour, three movers and a van is £110 an hour, and there is a two hour minimum. Commercial work runs to a minimum slot of £160 for two movers or £220 for three. We are not VAT registered, so the figure you are quoted is the figure you pay.
Four things move the number, and only one of them is distance:
- Access at both ends. Floor level, lifts, stairwell turns, and how close the van can legally stop. This is the biggest single factor by a distance.
- Volume. We quote in cubic metres. A genuine three bedroom house is usually 20 cubic metres or more, which is where the second vehicle question comes in.
- Crew size. More movers costs more per hour but often less in total, because the day compresses. On a Hastings Old Town carry, three is frequently cheaper than two.
- Packing and extras. Full or part packing, dismantling, reassembly, and whether beds need rebuilding on arrival.
Longer runs out of the county are priced as a fixed day rate rather than hourly, because an hourly clock on a motorway benefits nobody.
What The County Looks Like On Paper
East Sussex spans a genuinely wide range of property values, which is part of why no single price works across it.
The average house price across the Lewes district was £372,000 in April 2026.

The town itself runs well above the district figure, so that number understates what a Lewes townhouse costs. Against it, the ONS puts Eastbourne at £251,000 in May 2026 and Hastings at £237,000. A Lewes move and a Hastings move are frequently the same size of job with very different property types at each end, which is worth bearing in mind if you are comparing quotes you have seen for somewhere else in the county.
Do I Need A Parking Bay Suspension In East Sussex?
Possibly, and the answer depends on which district you are in. Civil parking enforcement across Hastings, Lewes, Eastbourne and Rother is run by East Sussex County Council, which handles suspensions and dispensations centrally. Wealden is not part of that scheme, so rural moves usually need a conversation with the property rather than a council application.

Three things to note. For a residential move the charge is £15 to set up per bay plus £2 per day per bay, which is a fraction of what the same thing costs in most city authorities, so cost is rarely the reason to avoid one. The bay length here is 5.5 metres, shorter than some neighbouring authorities use, so a Luton van may need more than one bay. And applications are assessed individually rather than to a fixed published lead time, which means the sensible move is to apply as soon as you have a confirmed date rather than working back from a deadline.

Relocation into East Sussex is one of our most common jobs, and most of it comes from London or from further up the country. The pattern is usually the same: a smaller flat in the city becoming a larger house here, which means the load grows rather than shrinks and the unload end takes longer than people plan for.

Civil Parking Enforcement (CPE). The system under which a council rather than the police enforces parking restrictions. In East Sussex it covers Hastings, Lewes, Eastbourne and Rother, but not Wealden.

Can you get a Luton van down a Wealden lane?
Often yes, but it needs checking rather than assuming, because a 3.5 tonne Luton needs more width, height clearance and turning room than the car that normally uses the drive. Overhanging trees and narrow gateposts are the two things that stop us most often.
Send a photo from the road end of the lane looking towards the house and another at the gate looking back. If the Luton cannot make it we plan a shuttle with the Sprinter, which adds time but keeps the job on track.
Do you do small moves and single items in East Sussex?
Yes. Single sofas, one room moves, marketplace collections and student moves are all routine, and for jobs that size our Man and Van service is usually the right call rather than a full removal.
There is a two hour minimum on local work, which is the only floor. Beyond that the job can be as small as you like.
Can you move me from London to East Sussex?
Yes, and it is one of our most common jobs. Inbound moves from London are priced as a fixed day rate rather than hourly, so the clock is not running while we sit on the A22 or the A21.
