Fleet Upgrade 2026: From A 2014 Euro 5 Merc To A Euro 6 AdBlue Transit
The single biggest change we have made to our environmental footprint was not a policy. It was replacing the van.
Our old workhorse was a 2014 Mercedes Luton, a straight diesel built to the Euro 5 standard. It has been replaced by a 2019 Ford Transit Luton, which runs AdBlue through a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to meet Euro 6.
Here is what that actually does, in plain terms. AdBlue is a urea solution held in a separate 21-litre tank and injected into the exhaust stream. It reacts with nitrogen oxides, the pollutants most associated with roadside air quality and respiratory harm, and converts them into harmless nitrogen and water vapour. On a Transit that tank covers somewhere around 5,000 miles between fills, so it is a routine top-up rather than a running headache.
Euro 6 cut the limit on nitrogen oxide emissions from diesel vehicles from 0.18 g/km to 0.08 g/km, a reduction of 56% on Euro 5.
Ford's own figures for the EcoBlue engine that took the Transit to Euro 6 put the NOx reduction at 55% against the engine it replaced, which lands in the same range from a different direction.
We want to be precise about this rather than round it up into a slogan, so here is the honest version. The improvement is in nitrogen oxides, not carbon. When Ford moved the Transit to Euro 6, CO2 emissions fell only slightly, from around 163g/km to 157g/km, while NOx fell by more than half. That gap is the whole point. Carbon is driven by how much fuel gets burnt, which is why our renewable diesel, route planning and fewer-trips approach still do the heavy lifting on that side.
What the upgrade genuinely delivers is a large cut in the local air pollutants that matter most when a van is running through Hanover, Kemptown or a school-run street in Lewes. That matters more than it might sound, because transport is not a minor contributor to this particular problem.
Department for Transport figures show domestic transport was responsible for 49% of the UK's domestic nitrogen oxide emissions in 2023, alongside 29% of domestic greenhouse gas emissions.
Nearly half of the country's NOx comes from transport. Cutting our own share of it by more than half is the single most useful thing a small removals firm can currently do about air quality, short of going electric.
ULEZ: The Part That Shows Up On Your Quote
There is a second, entirely practical benefit. Diesel vans must meet Euro 6 to avoid London's Ultra Low Emission Zone charge, which runs at £12.50 per day and now applies around the clock across every London borough.

Availability varies by forecourt and schedule, so we treat it as a priority rather than a guarantee. Either way, the route planning and steady driving still apply. Domestic transport accounts for 29% of UK domestic greenhouse gas emissions, and unlike nitrogen oxides that figure is not fixed by the van's emissions standard. It comes down to fuel burnt, which means the miles we do not drive matter as much as what goes in the tank.
Fewer Trips Through Better Planning: The Cleanest Mile Is The One We Don't Drive
We right-size the vehicle, survey access in advance, and load in an order that finishes the job in as few runs as possible. On tight streets we may stage the Luton nearby and shuttle with the Sprinter rather than drive loops looking for an approach that was never going to work.
