Fleet Upgrade 2026: From A 2014 Euro 5 Merc To A Euro 6 AdBlue Transit
The single biggest change we have made to our environmental footprint was not a policy. It was replacing the van.
Our old workhorse was a 2014 Mercedes Luton, a straight diesel built to the Euro 5 standard. It has been replaced by a 2019 Ford Transit Luton, which runs AdBlue through a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to meet Euro 6.
Here is what that actually does, in plain terms. AdBlue is a urea solution held in a separate 21-litre tank and injected into the exhaust stream. It reacts with nitrogen oxides, the pollutants most associated with roadside air quality and respiratory harm, and converts them into harmless nitrogen and water vapour. On a Transit that tank covers somewhere around 5,000 miles between fills, so it is a routine top-up rather than a running headache.
The Euro 6 standard requires roughly a 67% reduction in diesel NOx emissions compared with Euro 5.
Ford's own figures for the EcoBlue engine that took the Transit to Euro 6 put the NOx reduction at 55% against the engine it replaced, which lands in the same range from a different direction.
We want to be precise about this rather than round it up into a slogan, so here is the honest version. The improvement is in nitrogen oxides, not carbon. When Ford moved the Transit to Euro 6, CO2 emissions fell only slightly, from around 163g/km to 157g/km, while NOx fell by more than half. That gap is the whole point. Carbon is driven by how much fuel gets burnt, which is why our renewable diesel, route planning and fewer-trips approach still do the heavy lifting on that side.
What the upgrade genuinely delivers is a large cut in the local air pollutants that matter most when a van is running through Hanover, Kemptown or a school-run street in Lewes. That matters more than it might sound, because transport is not a minor contributor to this particular problem.
Department for Transport figures show domestic transport was responsible for 49% of the UK's domestic nitrogen oxide emissions in 2023, alongside 29% of domestic greenhouse gas emissions.
Nearly half of the country's NOx comes from transport. Cutting our own share of it by around two thirds is the single most useful thing a small removals firm can currently do about air quality, short of going electric.

We do not advertise certified carbon neutral removals, because we are not prepared to claim an offset badge we cannot properly evidence. What we offer instead is a practical pledge with visible actions on move day, lower impact fuel where available, paperless admin, reusable protection kit, box take back and planning that removes unnecessary trips. Government figures show domestic transport accounted for around 29 per cent of all territorial UK greenhouse gas emissions in 2023, most of it road vehicles, so mileage saved on your move is the measure that actually matters.
