Moving House In Arundel: How Your Moving Day Works

The stopping point, the van and the date, fixed before moving day. First Published: 05/11/2026.

How Does An Arundel Moving Day Work?

An Arundel moving day runs smoothly when the stopping point, the van and the date are fixed in advance, because the one way loop, the one hour bays and the town calendar shape the day far more than the mileage does. Get those three right and an Arundel move is calm. Leave them to the morning and it can be one of the slowest moves in West Sussex.

This guide is about the move itself. If you are still deciding whether the town suits you, our guide to what it's like to live in Arundel covers the streets, schools, prices, transport and day to day life. If you are ready to book, our house removals in Arundel page covers the streets we work on and how to get a quote. Read on once you have a date, or close to one, and want to know exactly how the day will work.

At A Glance

Fix the stopping point before the date: Vans reach the old town from the top of the hill through the one way loop, and most central bays allow one hour with no return, 09:00 to 17:00, Monday to Saturday. We use a frontage photo to agree where the van stops and which van comes before anything is booked.

Choose your date around the town: The third Saturday farmers market closes the lower High Street until mid afternoon, and Corpus Christi, castle season weekends and the Arundel Festival all fill the same streets, so an early weekday start is usually the calmest choice.

One person from quote to last box: You deal directly with Peter throughout, and every move is backed by £40,000 Goods in Transit per vehicle and £5 million Public Liability. Call 07552 555 820, book via www.eastsussexvan.com or see recent move days on Instagram.

What Makes An Arundel Move Different?

Arundel is a short drive from most of Sussex, but the old town changes how the day works. Five things shape every move here: the one way loop and one hour bays, which set where and how long the van can stop; the raised pavements on Maltravers Street, where every item is carried by hand; period cottage stairs, where the tightest turn decides what goes in whole; a town calendar that fills the same streets your van needs; and the A27, which is single carriageway through the town. The steps below show how we plan around each one.

Your Arundel Move, Step By Step

Most of the work on an Arundel move happens before the van arrives. Use this countdown so nothing is left to the morning.

Six Weeks Before

Check the town calendar: Compare your date with the dates to avoid below before you agree it with your solicitor or landlord.

Book the date and send the basics: Four to six weeks ahead suits most Arundel moves, and earlier for a Friday, the end of the month or the summer, because those dates fill first. Send both postcodes, a frontage photo taken from the pavement at each address, the floor levels and a list of your largest items.

Flag high value pieces: Tell us about any single item worth £500 or more, so it is on the plan from the start.

Decide on packing: Choose our full or partial packing service, or plan to pack yourself.

Three Weeks Before

Apply to Arun District Council: If the van needs more than an hour at the kerb in a central bay, apply for a bay suspension at least ten working days before the move. One suspension covers two bays, up to 10 metres, and yellow lines cannot be suspended. Applying at three weeks leaves room for a change of date, which needs a new application with at least three days' notice.

Book the Brighton and Hove end too: If you are leaving or moving onto a Brighton and Hove permit street, a Brighton & Hove City Council suspension needs seven full working days' notice, so we plan both ends together.

Agree what comes apart: Decide which pieces are dismantled for cottage stairs and which go in whole.

Line up storage early: If your dates might not line up, ask about storage between house moves now rather than on the day.

The Week Of The Move

Confirm key release: Ask your solicitor or letting agent for the expected release time and send it to us.

Label by destination: Mark every box with the room it is going to, not the room it came from.

Check the measurements are in: If we don't have them yet, send the front door width, the tightest stair turn and the lowest door head at the new address.

Pack a first night box: Kettle, mugs, chargers, bedding and toiletries. Keep it with you, not in the van.

Finish your change of address list: Set up post redirection and tell your bank, utilities and council your moving date, and our checklist of who to notify when you move house covers everyone else.

The Day Before

Clear the stopping point: Move your own car away from where the van will stop.

Tell the neighbours: On a narrow street, let them know a van will be loading in the morning and ask them to keep the space by your door free if they can.

Open the carry route: Clear hallways and landings so the route is free from every room to the kerb.

What Happens On Your Arundel Moving Day?

Every Arundel move follows the same order, whatever the size of the home. The order is what keeps a narrow street calm.

The lower High Street is no entry from the bridge end, so we come into the old town from the top of the hill and down through the one way loop. The stopping point is already agreed, so the van commits to the descent knowing exactly where it is going. We start early, because most central bays carry the one hour limit from 09:00 and in visitor season the old town car parks fill by mid morning, so an early start gives the crew the longest, quietest window at the kerb.

Before anything is lifted, we protect the route: floors, door frames, banisters and painted plaster in narrow halls. In older cottages, the walls are usually more fragile than the furniture. Wardrobes, king size divans and large sofas are then judged against the real turn on the stairs, not the one on paper, and anything that needs to come apart does so before it meets the staircase. Our furniture dismantling and reassembly is planned in at quote stage, not added on the day.

Because the A27 through Arundel is single carriageway, we set departure times around the road rather than the distance. At the other end, boxes go straight to the room written on them, furniture is rebuilt where it will stand, and we walk round with you at both ends so nothing is left behind.

Which Van And Crew Does Your Arundel Street Need?

In Arundel the right van is the one that can stop closest to your door, not the biggest one available. The street decides the van, and the carry distance decides the crew.

Old town cottages around Tarrant Street and King Street: Sprinter. Tight turns, short stopping points and steep cottage stairs decide the crew.

Maltravers Street: Sprinter. The raised pavements sit behind listed iron railings, so every item is carried by hand to a gap in the railings.

Riverside streets near the Arun: Decided from the frontage photo. Longer carries and awkward approach angles vary road by road.

Newer homes off Ford Road, including Arundel Gate: Luton. There is turning room, so a full family load moves in one go.

A full house on an old town street: Two Sprinter runs. Two controlled runs from the door usually beat one Luton parked a street away.

Our Sprinter is the old town van and our Luton takes the bigger loads where there is room to turn. If you are not sure which side of that line your street falls on, the frontage photo settles it.

Local Pro Tip: Take the Photo from the Pavement, Not the Doorstep

Stand on the far side of the street and photograph your front door with the kerb, the railings and any bay markings in the shot. One wide photo from the pavement tells us where the van can stop, how far the carry is and how many hands it needs, which a close up of the door never does.

Which Dates Should You Avoid For An Arundel Move?

An early weekday is the safest day to move in Arundel. These are the dates that squeeze the same streets your van needs.

Farmers market, third Saturday of every month: The lower High Street closes from 06:00 to 15:30, or to 17:00 in August and December, and bays around the Town Square and the Quayside are suspended for setup. Load the upper town in the morning or start after the street reopens. Arundel Town Council lists the closures.

Corpus Christi, late May or June: The date moves with Easter, and the carpet of flowers in the cathedral draws visitors over several days. Choose a weekday away from the celebration.

Castle season weekends, Easter to the end of October: Car parks fill by mid morning, so start early or move midweek.

Arundel Festival and Gallery Trail, late August: Both run for about ten days up to the August bank holiday Monday, with heavier traffic and tighter parking across the town. Avoid the bank holiday weekend if you can.

Victorian Christmas, early December: When it runs, the High Street and Tarrant Street close from the afternoon and bays are suspended. Check this year's date with the town council and move on a different day.

A27 at rush hour: Departures are slow on a single carriageway, so we time the run around the morning and evening peaks.

Local Pro Tip: Check the Third Saturday Before You Agree a Completion Date

Before you agree a completion date on an old town property, check whether it falls on the third Saturday of the month. Moving the date by one day is easy at offer stage and almost impossible once the chain has signed.

How Much Does An Arundel Move Cost?

An Arundel move costs what the time on the job costs, and in Arundel the time is set by the carry, the stairs and the timing more than by the size of the home. Smaller jobs are charged by the hour, from £60 an hour for one mover, £80 for two and £110 for three, with a two hour minimum. Full house moves are quoted either as a set price or hourly, always with an overtime clause. We are not VAT registered, so no VAT is added to your quote.

If you are not sure which kind of job yours is, our guide to man and van or full removals explains the difference. Every move booked in advance needs a deposit to secure the date, and the deposit comes off your final invoice.

The biggest factor is carry distance, because the further every item travels by hand, the longer the job. Maltravers Street is the clearest example, since nothing can be wheeled to the door. A long carry or steep cottage stairs also need more hands, and the right crew often finishes sooner than a smaller one would. On some streets two Sprinter runs from the door beat one Luton parked further away, adding drive time but saving carry time, and we will tell you which works out quicker for your street. Furniture that has to come apart for cottage stairs adds time at both ends, and hitting the A27 at rush hour adds time on the road.

Arun District Council charges its own standing fee for a bay suspension, currently £45, which is paid to the council on top of your move. A late key release adds waiting time, and anything well beyond the agreed plan is covered by the overtime clause. On larger jobs, travel to and from Arundel is built into the set price, while on smaller hourly jobs the clock starts when we arrive at your door.

The quickest Arundel moves have four things in common: a frontage photo at both ends before we quote, dismantling decided at quote stage, an early weekday start, and packing finished and labelled before we arrive.

Moving Out Of Arundel

Leaving Arundel is usually the easier end of the move, but it still sets the start time. We load the old town address first, while the kerb is quiet, and plan the drive around the A27.

Worthing and Chichester are both about twenty minutes along the A27, east and west, and Littlehampton, Rustington and Angmering are closer still, just south and east of town. We run regular removals in Worthing, so that run is a familiar one.

Brighton and Hove is about forty to forty five minutes away, and if you are moving onto a permit street we plan the suspension at that end too. Our removals in Brighton and Hove page covers how we plan those streets. Moves to London and further are quoted at a set price, with an overtime clause for time well beyond the agreed plan, and our London to Sussex removals page covers the London run in both directions. If London is the other end of your move, our tips for moving out of London cover the parking and loading rules to check there.

Moving Into An Arundel Cottage Or Listed Home

Measure the house before you measure the furniture. In a period cottage, the narrowest point on the route decides what goes in whole, and that point is rarely the front door.

Front door and hall: Measure the width of both, because a narrow hall often decides more than the door.

Stair turn: Measure the tightest turn, usually at the half landing, where most wardrobes get stuck.

Door heads: Measure the lowest one on the route, because older cottages often have door heads lower than the doors look.

Bedroom door: Measure the door the largest wardrobe or bed has to pass through, since it is the last test.

Send those four numbers with your quote request and we can tell you in advance what needs to come apart. If a piece was built inside the room, tell us, because it may have to stay or be taken apart in place. For artwork, ceramics and antiques, our guide to moving antiques and heirlooms explains how we wrap and load them.

What Happens If Your Keys Are Late?

Late keys on completion day hurt more in Arundel than in most towns, because a loaded van cannot wait long in a one hour bay. That is why the plan for late keys is made before the day, not during it.

If keys are likely to run late, book the suspension for the full day rather than the morning, because changing it later needs a fresh application. If the stopping point is a timed bay, the loaded van waits somewhere legal and comes back once the keys are released. And if completion slips to another day, we can hold your belongings in our storage service and deliver once the house is ready.

Our guide to what happens on completion day covers the rest of the day, from key release to the last box. If you want a team booked around your key release, our completion day removals service plans the whole day around it.

A Recent Arundel Move

One of our recent Arundel jobs was a move from a two bedroom house in East Preston into a retirement home in Arundel. It was a short run along the coast, but it was not a simple one, and it shows how we plan around the people and the building at the other end rather than just the distance.

We sent one Luton with two crew and a driver, and it ended up as two visits rather than one.

A retirement home runs to its own day, with staff, residents and set times to work around, so the move had to fit inside the window we were given. We worked with the staff on site, kept to their timings and finished inside the slot, rather than expecting the home to fit around the van.

The packing had not been done before we arrived, so rather than rush it and risk breakages, we moved what was ready on the first day and arranged a second visit for the rest. At the new home we set the boxes out in a single layer across the floor instead of stacking them, so they could be unpacked at an easy pace without lifting anything heavy, and we set up the sitting room so there was somewhere comfortable to sit from the first evening. Two days later we came back, packed the kitchen and the remaining rooms, and brought the rest across.

That evening, our customer sent Peter this message:

Just want to say you 3 were amazing today. Incredible the way you dealt with the chaos you encountered. I was touched & surprised that you had set up the sitting room for me in the new place as well.

If you are moving a parent or relative into a retirement or care home in Arundel, tell us the home's visiting and move in times when you ask for a quote, and we will plan the van, the crew and any return visit around them. If you would like their rooms ready as well, our unpacking service rebuilds the furniture, makes the bed and leaves the essentials somewhere obvious.

Key Terms

Parking Bay Suspension

A council booking that reserves a stretch of kerb for your move, so the van can stay longer than the bay normally allows. In Arundel it is arranged through Arun District Council on at least ten working days' notice and covers up to 10 metres, the length of two bays. Yellow lines cannot be suspended. In Brighton and Hove it goes through Brighton & Hove City Council on seven full working days' notice.

Kerbside Window

The time the van can legally stay at the stopping point. Most central Arundel bays allow one hour with no return, 09:00 to 17:00, Monday to Saturday, which is why early starts matter.

Carry Distance

The distance every item travels by hand between the van and the door. It is the single biggest factor in how long an Arundel move takes and how many crew it needs.

Two Run Plan

Moving a household in two Sprinter loads from the door instead of one Luton load from further away. On tight old town streets it is often the quicker option overall.

Overtime Clause

The part of a removals quote that covers time well beyond the agreed plan, for example when keys are released hours late. It protects both sides, because the plan and the price stay clear from the start.

Booking Deposit

The payment that secures your moving date. It is deducted from your final invoice, so it is part of the price, not an extra.

Frequently Asked Questions About Moving House In Arundel

How much does it cost to move house in Arundel?

Smaller Arundel moves are charged by the hour, from £60 an hour for one mover, £80 for two and £110 for three, with a two hour minimum. Full house moves are quoted as a set price or hourly, always with an overtime clause. We are not VAT registered, so no VAT is added, and the deposit that secures your date comes off your final invoice.

The price follows the time on the job, and in Arundel that is set by the carry distance, the stairs, the crew size and the timing more than by the number of bedrooms. A frontage photo at both ends, dismantling agreed at quote stage, an early weekday start and packing finished before we arrive all keep it down.

How long does a house move in Arundel take?

Most local house moves in and around Arundel are completed in a single day. The time depends less on the number of bedrooms than on how far each item is carried, how much furniture comes apart and when the keys are released, so a cottage on Maltravers Street can take longer than a bigger house off Ford Road with a driveway.

Departures are timed around the A27, which is single carriageway through the town, so a rush hour run adds time on the road. We give you a realistic timing with the quote, based on your frontage photos and measurements.

How far ahead should I book an Arundel move?

Book four to six weeks ahead for most Arundel moves, and earlier for a Friday, the end of the month or the summer, because those are the dates most completions land on. If your move is closer than that, ask anyway, because short notice moves are sometimes possible.

Booking early leaves time to check your date against the town calendar, apply for a parking suspension, agree the stopping point from your photos and decide what needs dismantling for cottage stairs. Six weeks out is the right moment to send us the basics, so the stopping point, van and crew are settled well before the day.

When do I need a parking suspension for a move in Arundel?

You need a parking suspension in Arundel when the van has to stay longer than an hour in a central bay between 09:00 and 17:00, Monday to Saturday. Apply to Arun District Council at least ten working days before the move, ideally at three weeks, and book the whole window you might need, because late requests are not guaranteed and any change needs a new application. The council currently charges a standing fee of £45, paid on top of your move. One suspension covers up to 10 metres, and yellow lines cannot be suspended.

We agree the stopping point from your frontage photo first, then plan the suspension around it. If the other end is a Brighton and Hove permit street, a Brighton & Hove City Council suspension needs seven full working days' notice, so we plan both ends together.

Do you offer packing for Arundel moves?

Yes, we offer a full or partial packing service for Arundel moves, planned into the same quote as the move itself. It suits old town cottages well, because boxes packed and labelled by the crew who load the van go in and out faster on narrow stairs.

If you would rather pack yourself, mark every box with the room it is going to, not the room it came from, and keep a first night box with you rather than in the van: kettle, mugs, chargers, bedding and toiletries. Tell us your choice at the six week stage so the crew and timings reflect it.

What happens if my Arundel completion is delayed on the day?

If your Arundel completion is delayed on the day, the loaded van waits somewhere legal rather than in a one hour bay and comes back as soon as the keys are released. If a delay looks likely, we book the parking suspension for the whole day rather than the morning, so ask your solicitor or letting agent for the expected key release time in the week of the move and send it to us.

A long wait for keys is covered by the overtime clause in your quote. If completion moves to another day entirely, we hold your belongings in storage and deliver once the house is ready.

Can you move me from Arundel to London or further afield?

Yes, we move households from Arundel to London and further across mainland UK, quoted at a set price with an overtime clause for time well beyond the agreed plan. The Arundel end is planned exactly as a local move would be, with the stopping point and van agreed from a frontage photo and the old town address loaded first while the kerb is quiet.

At the London end, we confirm the legal stopping point and any timed loading rules in advance, because they are often tighter than in Sussex, and our guide to London parking and loading rules explains what to check. Send both full postcodes and your preferred dates for a quote.
